[Risorgimento from the Japanese perspective]
During the Risorgimento, Japan was still far from Europe, and there was no direct negotiation with Italy. It was in 1866 (Keio 2) that Italian envoy V.F. Armignon arrived in Edo aboard the corvette Magenta, and the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Japan and Italy was concluded. The following year, in 1867, a delegation headed by Tokugawa Akitake was sent to Europe to attend the World's Fair in Paris and visit the countries that had signed the treaty, and they also stayed in Italy.
