It is an alphabet, so to speak, that represents the pronunciation of Chinese. In 1912 (the first year of the Republic of China), the Ministry of Education (corresponding to the Ministry of Education in Japan) decided to adopt Zhuyin alphabets, which are characters that represent the sounds of Chinese characters. In 1913, the Reading and Sound Unification Council was established, and after each province voted once to decide on the reading of Chinese characters, the characters were decided and used as ruby for Chinese characters. It was not until 1918 that the Ministry of Education published them. With the revision in 1920, the number of Zhuyin alphabets became 40. After Beijing pronunciation became the standard, the three characters Wan Yu Guang were used only for Fang pronunciation. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
