Roman Emperor. Reigned 161-180. Last of the Five Good Emperors. Born to a noble family from Spain, he was called Marcus Annius Verus in his childhood. He was favored by Hadrian and appointed as a priest at the age of eight. In 138, he was adopted by Antoninus Pius by Hadrian's order, and was promised the position of head of state. In 145, he married Antoninus Pius' daughter Faustina, and helped Antoninus Pius govern in a manner equivalent to co-ruling. During this time, he received a Greek education, and from around 146, he studied philosophy in depth at the recommendation of Fronto, and became interested in the Stoic school.

ローマ皇帝。在位161‐180年。五賢帝の最後。スペイン出の名門に生まれ，幼時にはマルクス･アンニウス･ウェルスMarcus Annius Verusといった。ハドリアヌスにかわいがられ8歳で神官に取り立てられ，彼の命令で138年にアントニヌス･ピウスの養子になり，のちの元首位を約束された。145年アントニヌス･ピウスの娘ファウスティナを妻とし，共治に等しい形でアントニヌス･ピウスの統治を助けた。この間ギリシア語教育を受け，146年ころからはフロントの勧めで哲学を深く学び，ストア学派に傾倒していった。
