At first, sports grounds were called amusement parks or playgrounds, which were Japanese translations of playgrounds and Spielplatz, but they eventually came to be used interchangeably with gymnastics grounds (Turnplatz). When the Gymnastics Training School was established in 1878 (Meiji 11) and the first full-time gymnastics teachers in Japan were trained there, playgrounds gradually came to be called gymnastics grounds. ...
