Yukiteru Hase - I'm going to Nagatani
[Born] Tenpo 14 (1843), Kumamoto
[Died] 1920. Tokyo jiuta and sokyoku performer. He was blind. His childhood name was Hanzaburo. He became a disciple of Yukinomiyako (of the Kyushu-based Terazaki Kengyo lineage of the Osaka school) in Kumamoto at the age of six. He was called Teruka, and after his teacher's death, he studied under the head of the same school, Renminomiyako, and changed his name to Renminomiyako at the age of 17. At the age of 21, he studied under Miyazaki Koto (a senior disciple of Miyahara Kengyo of the Ishizuka Kengyo lineage) in Kurume. He progressed to Koto and took the name Kokito. He became independent in Kumamoto in 1877 and was known as a master of the sangen. In 1893, he moved to Tokyo and was the first to introduce Kyushu-style jiuta to Tokyo. He tried modifying the sangen and bachi (plectrum) and devising ways to hang the torso, and his bachi in particular was called the Kyushu bachi. His students included Kawase Satoko and Fukuda Eika, and it is said that most jiuta in Tokyo is of the Kyushu-style.
