Emile Berliner

1851‐1929
American inventor and electrical engineer. Born in Hanover, he emigrated to America in 1870 to escape the oppression of Prussia, living in New York and Washington, D.C., and changing jobs frequently while devoting his life to inventing. In 1877 he invented the contact resistance type transmitter (microphone, patented in 1895), and in 1878 the induction coil transformer, and in the same year served as equipment supervisor for Bell Corporation. In 1887 he invented the phonograph (later the gramophone). He also invented a lightweight engine for aircraft (1908), and under his guidance his son, Henry A. Berliner, designed the helicopter (1919).

アメリカの発明家，電気技術者。ハノーファーに生まれ，1870年プロイセンの圧制を逃れてアメリカに移住，ニューヨークとワシントンに住み，職を転々としながら生涯を発明活動にささげた。77年接触抵抗型送話器(マイクロホン，1895特許)，78年誘導コイル変圧器を発明，同年ベル社の機材監督官を務めた。87年には蓄音器(後の〈グラモフォン〉)を発明。このほか航空機用の軽量エンジンの発明(1908)もあり，息子のヘンリーHenry A. Berlinerは彼の指導でヘリコプターを設計(1919)している。
