A community of Christians who recognize the Pope as the representative of Christ on earth. The word "Catholic" comes from the Greek word katholikos, meaning "universal" or "whole," and has long been used to describe the characteristics of the true Christian church, along with "one," "holy," and "apostolic." However, today, the term "Catholic Church" refers to the Roman Catholic Church, which has approximately 600 million members worldwide and is distinguished from Protestant denominations and the Eastern Orthodox Church, and which regards the Bishop of Rome (the Pope), the successor of the Apostle Peter, as its supreme leader.

ローマ教皇が地上におけるキリストの代理者であることを認めるキリスト信徒の共同体。〈普遍的〉〈全体的〉を意味するギリシア語katholikosに由来する〈カトリック〉という言葉は，〈一〉〈聖〉〈使徒伝来〉などとともに，真のキリスト教会の特徴を示す言葉として古くから用いられてきた。しかし，今日〈カトリック教会〉といえば，プロテスタントの諸教派，東方正教会などから区別された，使徒ペテロの後継者であるローマ司教(ローマ教皇)を最高の指導者と仰ぐ，全世界に約6億の信徒を擁するローマ･カトリック教会のことである。
