The former name of a town (Sakocho) in Tome County, northeastern Miyagi Prefecture. The area now occupies the western part of Tome City. The former Sakocho was formed in 1955 (Showa 30) when Sanumacho and the two villages of Nitta and Kitakata merged. In 2005 (Heisei 17), it merged with the eight towns of Tome, Towa, Nakada, Toyosato, Yoneyama, Ishikoshi, Minamikata, and Tsuyama to become Tome City. The JR Tohoku Main Line and national highways 346 and 398 run through the area. The Sakogawa River flows south in the east, Naganuma in the center, and Izunuma and Uchinuma in the north. Funakoshi-numa has already been reclaimed, and reclamation is underway around Izu-numa and Naga-numa. Most of the area is rice paddies at an elevation of about 8 meters, and it has been a grain-producing region since the Edo period, but it has often been subject to flooding. Rice cultivation is the main industry, but livestock farming and horticulture are also thriving, and the area is one of the largest in the prefecture in terms of beef cattle breeding. Sanuma, the central settlement, is said to have been the site of a castle built by Terui Taro Takanao, a vassal of Fujiwara Hidehira, and in the Edo period it was the residence of the Watari clan, a member of the Date clan. It has been a transportation hub since the Meiji period, with water transportation on the Hasakagawa River and the construction of a light railway, and it remains the administrative, economic, and cultural center of the Tome region. Swans and wild geese fly to Izu-numa and Uchinuma, and the area has been designated a national natural monument for "birds and their habitats" and is also a Ramsar Convention registered wetland.
