…The water level of artesian groundwater is usually higher than that of unpressurized groundwater, but this may not be the case depending on the geological conditions. Artesian wells were first dug in the Artois region of France, so they were called artesian and also called tube wells. A basin with artesian groundwater is called an artesian basin, and the Great Artesian Basin in Australia and the Kazusa region of Chiba Prefecture are typical examples.
