This is a technique in which a needle is inserted into the pregnant uterus to collect amniotic fluid, which is then used to diagnose the condition of the fetus. This becomes possible from around the 14th week of pregnancy, but should not be overused as it involves some degree of risk. By culturing fetal skin cells contained in the amniotic fluid, chromosomal abnormalities, gender, congenital metabolic disorders, etc. can be diagnosed, and by analyzing substances contained in the amniotic fluid, the maturity of the fetus and the degree of anemia caused by Rh blood type incompatibility can be diagnosed. In addition, a method in which a contrast agent is injected into the amniotic fluid to examine the condition of the fetus's body and internal organs with X-rays is also sometimes called amniotic fluid diagnosis.
