Yellow feldspar - melilite

A mineral also called melilite. It is a series name that represents a solid solution of magnesium-rich åkermanite and aluminum-rich gehlenite. The color changes with the change in the composition. It forms short prismatic crystals, not fine columns. It occurs in skarns of high-temperature rocks, or in alkaline volcanic rocks that are poor in silica. It also occurs as a major component of carbonatites (igneous rocks composed of carbonate minerals). In Japan, gehlenite-rich minerals occur in large crystals and lumps in skarns in Kushiro, Shobara City, Hiroshima Prefecture, and Fuka, Bitchu Town, Takahashi City, Okayama Prefecture. Akermanite-rich minerals occur in small amounts in basalts containing nepheline in Nagahama, Hamada City, Shimane Prefecture. The English name comes from the Greek word for honey, due to the general color of this mineral.

メリライトともよばれる鉱物。マグネシウムに富むオケルマン石åkermaniteと、アルミニウムに富むゲーレン石gehleniteとの固溶体を表す系列名。成分変化によって色も変化する。正方短柱状結晶をなし、細柱状にはならない。高温生成の岩石のスカルン中、あるいはケイ酸分に乏しいアルカリ火山岩中に産する。またカーボナタイト（炭酸塩鉱物からなる火成岩）の主要構成鉱物として産する。日本では、ゲーレン石成分に富むものは広島県庄原(しょうばら)市久代(くしろ)、岡山県高梁(たかはし)市備中(びっちゅう)町布賀(ふか)などのスカルン中に大きな結晶や塊を産する。オケルマン石成分に富むものは、島根県浜田市長浜の霞石(かすみいし)を含む玄武岩中に少量産する。英名はこの鉱物の一般的な色から蜂蜜(はちみつ)を意味するギリシア語に由来する。
