A general term for fishes belonging to the order Salmopercae that inhabit the freshwaters of North America. It consists of two families and three species. In Latin, "salmo" means salmon and "perca" means sea bass. In terms of classification, this group is intermediate between the primitive salmonoid type and the evolved sea bass type, but is considered to be closer to the sea bass type in several respects, such as having pecten scales, an upper jaw bordered only by the premaxilla, no teeth on the maxilla, well-developed spines on the fins, a lack of an orbital sphenoid bone, and the front end of the pelvic girdle attached to the pseudoclavicular bone.
