An Italian masked improvisational theater. Commedia dell'arte means "comedy performed by professional actors." Although arte is often mistakenly interpreted as "art" or "art," in this case it means "profession." In other words, this name was created to distinguish it from plays performed by people who were not professional actors (literati, aristocrats, clergy) at royal courts, noble houses, churches, and monasteries. The actors of Commedia dell'arte were mainly descendants of acrobats and street performers, and many of them were illiterate.

イタリアの仮面即興劇。コメディア･デラルテとは〈職業俳優によって演じられる喜劇〉の意。arteは〈芸〉あるいは〈芸術〉とあやまって解釈されることがしばしばあるが，この場合は〈職業〉を意味している。つまり宮廷，貴族の館，教会，僧院などで，俳優を職業としない人たち(文人，貴族，聖職者)によって上演された演劇と区別するためにこの名称は生まれた。コメディア･デラルテの俳優は，主として軽業師や大道芸人の末裔（まつえい）であり，字の読めない者も多かった。
