Sakegawa [Village] - Sakegawa

Japanese: 鮭川[村] - さけかわ

A village in Mogami District, northern Yamagata Prefecture. Population 6,092 (1995). Located on the outer edge of the Shinjo Basin, the Sakegawa River, a tributary of the Mogami River, flows south through the center of the town. Flat land stretches along the coast, but the rest of the area is hilly and mountainous. Surrounded by mountains on all sides, the town is cold and has little sunshine. The main industry is agriculture, but rice production is low, and many people migrate to the Kanto region and other areas to work. In addition to rice, wild vegetables are also produced. The population has been declining significantly in recent years. Hanezawa Onsen (baking soda spring, 47°C) is located in Nakawatari.

山形県北部，最上郡の村。人口6092(1995)。新庄盆地の外縁にあたり，中央部を最上川の支流鮭川が南流し，この沿岸に平地がひろがるほかは丘陵，山地となっている。四方を山に囲まれているため，寒冷で日照時間が短い。主産業は農業であるが，稲作の生産性は低く，関東地方などに出稼ぎに出る者が多い。稲作のほかには山菜の産が多い。近年，人口の減少が著しい。中渡（なかわたり）に羽根沢温泉(重曹泉，47℃)がある。
