A full-length novel from the mid-Joseon Dynasty of Korea (17th century). Written by Kim Man-jung. Date of publication unknown. It depicts the conflict between wives and concubines in an aristocratic household. It borrows place and personal names from China, but is said to be a satire of a court incident surrounding King Sukjong at the time. The original work was written in Hangeul and aimed at women and children, and was later translated into classical Chinese by his great-grandson Kim Chun-taek, who spread it to male intellectuals as well. It is a representative work of the popular novel that emerged from the 17th century onwards, combining entertainment and moral teaching.
