It is one of the names of musical components of Heikyoku or Noh chants. In Heikyoku, it refers to the second part of a poem following a poem set to tune as an ageuta (upper verse). However, some refer to this pair as kamiuta and shiuta (lower verse). Shimouta in Noh is one of the poems set to tune in 7-5 rhythm in a hiragana style. It is a short chant of about 2 to 4 lines, starting from the middle notes and often remaining in the middle and lower ranges, but some have a short upper section. In the act where the shite appears, there are many examples of shimouta that precede the upper verse, as well as those that precede the longi and those with a lyric style that goes, "Let's do XX now."
