…G. Giacosa and Luigi Illica (1857-1919) co-wrote the libretto for the five-act play of the same name, written by French playwright V. Sardou for the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt. In 1800, Italy under Austrian control was fighting in various places against the backdrop of political instability in Rome, where independence activists also joined the activities. The opera depicts the love and conflict between the singer Tosca, her lover, the painter and liberal Cavaradossi, and the pro-establishment police commissioner Scarpia, who has a wicked love for Tosca. In addition to the ingenious characterization of the characters and the use of leitmotifs, the dramatic tension and the beauty of the passionate melodies make it one of the most beloved operas in the world. …
