…With this wealth and military power as a backdrop, he was granted the title of Cheonghaejin Ambassador by King Heungdeok in 828, and gained maritime rights in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea areas, and also gained influence in Sillabang, a settlement of Silla people in Tang China. Cheonghaejin took on the character of a local independent government. In the midst of the struggle for the throne (Kim Heonchang Rebellion) and local rebellions that began at the end of the 8th century, he protected Kim Yujeong, who had lost the battle for the throne after King Heungdeok's death and fled the royal capital (Gyeongju), defeated King Minae, helped King Jinmu (Yujeong) ascend to the throne in 839, and was made General of the Sea by the succeeding King Munseong. However, he failed to obtain the position of the king's in-laws, and rebelled in 841, leading to his death assassination. …
