Its abbreviation is CFP. It was established in 1924 to operate Iraq Oil, which held 23.75% of the shares of the former Turkish oil company, based on the concession that France had acquired as a result of World War I. In 1929, it established the French Refining Company (CFR) as a refining division. It subsequently developed and produced oil in Middle Eastern countries such as Iraq, Abu Dhabi, and Qatar, as well as in Tunisia, Algeria, and former French territories in Northwest Africa. It ranked second only to the international oil companies (international oil cartels) and was also called the "eighth major." In 1991, it changed its name to Total. It was privatized in 1992. In June 1999, it merged with Belgium's Petrofina and changed its name to Total Fina. In September of the same year, it merged with Elf Aquitaine to form Total Fina Elf, the fourth largest company in the world in terms of sales.
