It is commonly known as Sakudaira. It is a plateau basin in the upper reaches of the Chikuma River in eastern Nagano Prefecture. At an altitude of 600-1000m, it is surrounded by Mt. Asama, the Kanto Mountains, and the Yatsugatake Mountain Range, and the surrounding area transitions to volcanic foothills. It is roughly divided into two regions, east and west, by the Chikuma River, which runs north to south. The western part is a plateau called Mimakigahara and Yaehara, where loam layers have accumulated at an altitude of over 700m. The eastern part is further divided in two by the Namezu River, a tributary of the Chikuma River. The northern half is a deposit of mudflows from Mt. Asama, and the southern half is an alluvial fan of the Chikuma River. It has a typical inland climate with little precipitation. In addition to rice cultivation, highland vegetables and flowers are cultivated in the highland areas at altitudes of over 800m. Saku carp were once cultivated in the rice paddies, but now they are cultivated in reservoirs. The surrounding plateau is home to many villas, including the Karuizawa Plateau at the foot of Mount Asama. The main cities are Komoro and Saku.
