It refers to the state in which the free thyroid hormone concentration in the blood is elevated, and the characteristic clinical symptoms or biochemical changes that result from this. Thyroid hormones include thyroxine (T ₄ ) and triiodothyronine (T ₃ ), and in hyperthyroidism, the concentration of one or both is elevated.
