A general term for birds in the family Ciconidae in the order Ciconiformes, or birds that belong to the family Ciconidae. The white stork Ciconia boyciana (illustration) is about 115 cm long. It is a large, white bird about the size of a crane, with only the flight feathers, primaries and overlying coverts being black, and the legs being red. There are three subspecies of stork in the world, and the white stork C. b . boyciana , found in Japan, the Korean peninsula, northeastern China and Primorsky Krai, is large and has a black beak. コウノトリ目コウノトリ科の鳥,またはコウノトリ科に属する鳥の総称。コウノトリCiconia boyciana(英名white stork)(イラスト)は全長約115cm。ツル大の大型白色の鳥で,風切羽と初列および大雨覆いのみ黒く,脚が赤い。世界に3亜種があり,日本,朝鮮半島,中国東北部,沿海州に分布するコウノトリC.b.boycianaは大型でくちばしが黒色である。ヨーロッパと北アフリカで繁殖するものは小型でくちばしが赤く,シュバシコウ(朱嘴鸛)C.b.ciconiaと呼ばれる。
