...Later, he came into conflict with royal officials over the distribution of encomiendas, and in 1827 returned to Spain to assert his own cause. In April 1829, he was made Marquis of the Oaxaca Valley by the King, and was given 22 villages and 23,000 Indians, but was not granted the right to govern the conquered territories. In 1830, he returned to Mexico and began a large-scale sugar manufacturing business, as well as the cultivation of grains, cotton, and fruit trees, mainly in his territory in the Morelos region, becoming the largest sugar manufacturer in New Spain and the largest encomendero in the New World. He also embarked on a new discovery project, discovering Baja California (now part of the California peninsula) in 1836.

…son of H. Cortes, conqueror of the Aztec Empire. Second Marquess of the Oaxaca Valley. Born in Cuernavaca, Mexico, he traveled to Spain in 1540 and served under King Carlos I and then King Philip II before returning to Mexico in 1563.
