Rock drill (sakuganki)

Japanese: 削岩機(鑿岩機) - さくがんき（英語表記）rock drill

A machine that drills holes in rocks, mainly for blasting, by striking or cutting. Machines that use striking are called percussion jackhammers, and in the narrow sense of the word jackhammer refer to this type of machine. Machines that use cutting are called rotary jackhammers, as they rotate a rod with a bit attached to the end. In addition, rotary percussion jackhammers, which combine the two, have become more common in recent years. Percussion jackhammers are primarily powered by compressed air, while small rotary jackhammers are driven by compressed air motors or electric motors, and large ones by hydraulic motors.

打撃または切削によって，主として爆破用の孔を岩石にあける機械。打撃によるものを打撃式削岩機といい，狭義に削岩機というときは，この形式のものを指す。切削によるものは，ビットを先端にとりつけたロッドを回転させるので，回転式削岩機という。そのほか，両者を組み合わせた回転打撃式削岩機が近年普及しつつある。打撃式削岩機はもっぱら圧縮空気で，回転式削岩機は，小型のものは圧縮空気モーターまたは電動機で，大型のものは油圧モーターで駆動される。
