Born: February 5, 1524 in Lisbon Died June 10, 1580. Portuguese poet from Lisbon. He is said to have studied in Coimbra, and after frequent visits to the court of Dom João III, he went to Ceuta in North Africa in 1547, where he lost his right eye in a battle with the Moors. He returned to Portugal three years later, and during his one-year imprisonment for a duel, he wrote the first chapter of Os Lusíadas, an epic poem that celebrates Portugal's historical glory, with the voyage of Vasco da Gama as its theme. In 1553, he traveled to Macau via Goa, where he wrote six more chapters. He returned to Lisbon in 1570, and published the first edition of Os Lusíadas in 1572, but he spent his final years miserably, suffering from poverty and illness.
