Red cornetfish - Red cornetfish (English spelling)

A marine fish belonging to the family Cornetidae in the order Sticklebacks of the class Osteichthyes. It is found in all parts of Japan south of Hokkaido, and in warm waters all over the world except the eastern Pacific Ocean. Its body is long and slender, with a longitudinally flattened snout and a tubular snout. The two soft rays of its caudal fin are long and thread-like. It differs from the closely related Blue Cornetfish in that it has a deep depression between the eyes, sharp backward-facing spines on the lateral line scales of its caudal peduncle, and is reddish brown in color. It grows to a total length of 2 meters. Adult fish live in deep waters offshore and are caught with bottom trawls. It has a good taste and is served as sashimi, grilled with salt, and as a soup ingredient.

硬骨魚綱トゲウオ目ヤガラ科に属する海水魚。北海道以南の日本各地、東部太平洋を除く全世界の暖海域に広く分布する。体は細長くて縦扁(じゅうへん)し吻(ふん)は管状。尾びれの2軟条は糸状に長く伸びる。近縁のアオヤガラとは、目と目の間が深くくぼみ、尾柄(びへい)部の側線鱗(りん)に鋭い後ろ向きの棘(とげ)があり、赤褐色である点で異なる。全長2メートルになる。成魚は沖合いの深みにすみ、底引網で漁獲される。味がよくて、刺身、塩焼き、椀種(わんだね)にする。
