Dates of birth and death unknown. Court painter in the late Heian period. Known to have died before 1174 (Joan 4). Son of Kiyotaka. Although a court official, he excelled in painting and served on many occasions for Emperor Toba. In 1154 (Kuju 1), he painted the door illustrations for Toba Kongoshin-in Temple, and was promoted to Junior Fifth Rank, and the following year, 1155, he was appointed Mikawa no Kami. Furthermore, the portrait of Emperor Toba that stood at Shitennoji Temple at the time was painted by Takayoshi at the command of Emperor Goshirakawa. He also designed makie lacquerware. Since the Edo period, it has been said that he was the author of the Tale of Genji Illustrated Scroll (Tokugawa and Goto versions), but there is no definite proof.
