A city in northwest Yamagata Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1933. Most of the city is in the Shonai Plain, including the island of Okino Tobishima. Sakata Port at the mouth of the Mogami River developed as an important port for the West-bound shipping of Shonai rice and safflower during the Edo period, and wealthy merchants such as the Homma family played an active role. The city developed around the port, and the Uetsu Main Line and the Japan Sea Tohoku Expressway run through it. Since the establishment of Tekkosha in 1939, many chemical industries have been established here, producing chemical fertilizers and chemicals. Sakata Port was designated an important port in 1951, and is the core of the coastal industrial zone. In 1976, the city center was destroyed by a major fire, but a modern fire-resistant city was completed in 1979. The city produces a lot of high-quality Shonai rice, and in the southern part of the city there are 12 Yamakyo Warehouses (built in 1893) with a capacity of 15,000 tons of rice. Vegetables, grapes, and peaches are cultivated on the coastal sand dunes. The Homma Museum of Art and Hiyoriyama Park are located here. Shonai Airport opened in 1991. In November 2005, the towns of Hirata, Matsuyama, and Yahata in Akumi County were incorporated into the city. The city sustained damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. Area: 602.97 km2 . Population: 111,151 (2010). → Related items Rikuu West Line Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
