Aceh Province (English spelling)

A special region at the northern tip of Sumatra, Indonesia. Area: 55,392 km2, population: 3.86 million (1995). Provincial capital: Banda Aceh. The main industry is rice cultivation, with rubber produced in the east and coffee produced in the center for export. Since ancient times, it has been a key transportation point between the east and west, and is the place where Islam took root the earliest in the country. Sources such as Marco Polo's The Travels of Marco Polo confirm that the kings and residents of the small port city-states of Samudra Pasay and Perak on the east coast converted to Islam at the end of the 13th century. From the 16th century onwards, the Acehnese Kingdom based in Banda Aceh expanded its power based on the flourishing pepper trade, and came to control the region.
