Katsumune's Ten Phrase Theory - Shoshu Jikugiron

Japanese: 勝宗十句義論 - しょうしゅうじっくぎろん

This is a compendium of the Indian Vaisheshika school written by Huigetsu. Only the Chinese translation by Xuanzang remains, and the Sanskrit original has not been handed down. It is estimated to date from the 6th century, but its theory differs considerably from the common Vaisheshika theory of the same period. Usually, six principles (phrase meanings) are established: substance, quality, motion, universal, particular, and intrinsic. However, this book adds four more: universal and particular, causal potency, inertness, and nothingness, making ten principles. Although this book is not a Buddhist treatise, it is included in the Tripitaka, and several commentaries on it were written in Japan by scholars of the Edo period.

慧月（えがつ）作の，インドのバイシェーシカ学派の綱要書。玄奘による漢訳のみが現存し，サンスクリット原典は伝わっていない。6世紀のものと推定されるが，同時期のバイシェーシカ学派の普通の説とはかなり違う。ふつうは，実体，性質，運動，普遍，特殊，内属の6原理(句義)を立てるが，この書は，普遍かつ特殊，原因の力能，無力能，無の四つを加えて10原理を立てる。この書は仏教の論書ではないが，大蔵経に収められ，日本では江戸時代の学僧たちによって，いくつかの注釈書が著された。
