Born: September 29, 1795, Batobo Died July 25, 1826. Petersburg, Russia. He joined the Northern Society of the Decembrists in 1823 and engaged in revolutionary propaganda. His thorough republicanism made him one of the most radical members of the Decembrists, along with P. Pesteli of the Southern Society. After the uprising in 1825, he was sentenced to death and hanged. As a revolutionary romantic poet, he left behind a collection of ballad-like epic poems, Dumy (1825), depicting the patriotic freedom fighters of Russia's past, and Nalivaiko (24-25, unfinished), depicting the heroic deeds of the leaders of the Ukrainian independence movement. He is also known for publishing the literary magazine Polyarnaya zvezda (23-25), together with fellow Decembrist A. Malinsky and others.
