1850‐1921 A Hungarian Jewish scholar of Islam. He taught Arabic and Islamic studies at the University of Budapest from 1872 onwards, and published many works in German. He studied Islamic jurisprudence and theology in depth, and is particularly known for his study of one of the Islamic legal schools which is now extinct, The Zahiris, Their Doctrines and History (1884). His other works include Studies in Islam (2 volumes, 1889, 90), Lectures on Islam (1910), and Essays on Arabic Linguistics (2 volumes, 1896, 99).
