Sakai Magara

Social activist. Born in Tokyo as the eldest daughter of Sakai Toshihiko. Graduated from Seijo Girls' High School. In 1921, she was the youngest organizer of the Sekirankai (Japanese military communist organization) and the first woman to participate in the second May Day event. In November of the same year, she was arrested for the Communist Army Incident (four months in prison). In July 1922, she joined the Japanese Communist Party, but later left and continued her pro-birth women's movement in the Women's Division of the Political Research Association, the Pro-Birth Women's League, and the Social Mass Women's League. After the war, she was active in the Japan Women's Voters League and the Society to Reveal the Truth of the High Treason Incident. During this time, she married Kondo Kenji in 1938 and took the surname Kondo.

社会運動家。堺利彦の長女として東京に生まれる。成女高等女学校卒業。1921年赤瀾会結成に最年少で世話人となり，第2回メーデーに女性として初めて参加。同年11月軍隊赤化事件で検挙される(禁錮4ヵ月)。22年7月日本共産党に入党したが，その後離れ，政治研究会婦人部，無産婦人同盟，社会大衆婦人同盟などで無産婦人運動を続けた。戦後は日本婦人有権者同盟，〈大逆事件の真実を明らかにする会〉などで活動。この間，38年に近藤憲二と結婚し，近藤姓となる。
