A wool or linen undergarment worn by men and women in ancient Rome. It was also worn as outerwear at home and in the military. It was made of two pieces of fabric sewn together at the shoulders and sides, and was worn with a belt around the neck. Originally it was sleeveless, and even those with sleeves were mostly short, but during the imperial period, long-sleeved versions (tunica manicata) also appeared. For ordinary men, it reached the knees, for military personnel it was shorter, and for women it reached almost the ankles. Senators' versions had one broad scarlet stripe, and knights' versions had two narrow stripes of the same color. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
