A general term for ectoparasitic wasps belonging to the order Hymenoptera, family Mutillidae (illustration, illustration). More primitive than the Cariidae, they do not build nests but paralyze the host with their stingers and then lay eggs on its body. Males are generally winged, while females are wingless. The body is covered with dark hairs, and the abdomen is covered with horizontal bands of dense hairs in white, yellow, or red. Body length is 3 to 30 mm, and males are usually larger. Distributed worldwide, especially in the tropics and subtropics. Most lay eggs on the surface of the prepupae or pupae of wasps belonging to the order Hymenoptera, family Aspergillidae, or on the inside of the cocoons that contain them.
