The protagonist of the Arabic tale "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves (Ḥikāya 'Ali Bābā ma'a al‐luṣuṣ al‐arba'in)". Ali Baba uses the spell "Open thy gate, O Sesame!" to obtain the treasure in the cave where the forty thieves are hiding. The thieves try to kill him, but the clever slave girl Marjana's wit and courage allow him to destroy them. In the early 18th century, the French orientalist A. Galland included Ali Baba in his "The Thousand and One Nights", and the tale became known throughout the world, but no Arabic original, either in the original or in an independent copy, has been found.

アラビア語の説話《アリ･ババと四十人の盗賊の物語Ḥikāya ‘Alī Bābā ma‘a al‐luṣuṣ al‐arba‘īn》の主人公。アリ･ババは〈ゴマよ，お前の門を開け(開け，ゴマ！)〉という呪文により40人の盗賊団の隠した洞窟内の財宝を手に入れる。そのため盗賊たちに命を狙われるが，賢い女奴隷マルジャーナの機知と勇気により盗賊たちを滅ぼすという筋。18世紀はじめフランスの東洋学者A.ガランがその《千夜一夜物語》に入れたことで世界中に知られたが，《千夜一夜物語》の原本にしても，独立の写本にしても，アラビア語原典は見つからなかった。
