A former town in Akan District, eastern Hokkaido. It includes the Akan River basin that flows out of Lake Akan, and borders Kushiro City to the south. The northern part belongs to Akan National Park, and Lake Akan Onsen is a tourist base. In October 2005, it was incorporated into Onbetsu Town, Shiranuka District, and Kushiro City.
