Year of death: Eiroku 11.9 (1568) Year of birth: Tenbun 7 (1538) The 14th Shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate. The eldest son of Sakai Kubo Ashikaga Yoshitsuna. Born in Hirashima Manor, Awa (Tokushima Prefecture). His father Yoshitsuna was supported by Miyoshi Motonaga and tried to become Shogun but failed, so he campaigned to have Yoshihide appointed instead. In March 1551, when the relationship between Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiteru and Miyoshi Nagayoshi had deteriorated, Yoshitsuna attempted to go to Kyoto, but failed. He sought refuge in Suo for a time, relying on the Mori clan, but returned to Awa in 1563. When Yoshiteru was assassinated in May of the same year, he was supported by the Miyoshi Triumvirate, and in June of the following year he advanced to Awaji, and with the assistance of Shinohara Nagafusa and others, he entered Fumon-ji Temple in Tomida, Settsu at the end of the same year, where he was appointed as the Left Horse Captain with the rank of Junior Fifth Rank, and in February of the 11th year, he was appointed Shogun, which he had longed for, and was known as the "Samurai of Tomida." However, in the autumn of the same year, when Oda Nobunaga went to Kyoto and the Sanninshu government collapsed, he fell ill with a tumor and died.
