A general term for compounds in which one or two hydrogen atoms of the dibasic acid sulfuric acid (HO) ₂ SO ₂ are replaced by a hydrocarbon group R. There are two types: acidic esters (monoesters) RO-SO ₂ -OH and neutral esters (diesters) RO-SO ₂ -OR. Acidic esters are produced by reacting alcohol with concentrated sulfuric acid or fuming sulfuric acid. They can also be obtained by adding sulfuric acid to alkenes. Acidic esters are viscous liquids and cannot be distilled. They dissolve in water and are hydrolyzed to alcohol when heated.

二塩基酸である硫酸(HO)₂SO₂の水素原子1個または2個が炭化水素基Rで置換された化合物の総称。酸性エステル(モノエステル)RO－SO₂－OHと中性エステル(ジエステル)RO－SO₂－ORの2種類が存在する。　酸性エステルはアルコールに濃硫酸または発煙硫酸を作用させると生成する。また，アルケンに硫酸を付加しても得られる。酸性エステルは粘稠な液体で蒸留できない。水に溶け，加熱すると加水分解されてアルコールとなる。
