Born on July 8, 1772. He first studied under Kuroda Ryozan, and later went to Kyoto to study under Matsumura Gekkei. He specialized in landscape painting, and along with Matsumura Keibun, he became one of the leading painters of the Shijo school. He passed away on July 11, 1742. He was 73 years old. He was from Bitchu (Okayama Prefecture). His pen name was Shigen. He was commonly known as Shiba. His pen names were Koikyou, Kouson, and Sumishinsai. His works include "The Eight Views of Omi."
