In the Middle Ages, this powerful clan ruled Kurushima Island in Iyo (Ehime Prefecture). There are theories that they were a branch of the Minamoto or Kono clans, but it is said that they were a branch of the Murakami clan, a pirate clan in the Seto Inland Sea whose main base was Omishima, Noshima, Kurushima, and Innoshima. During the Muromachi and Sengoku periods, they were under the control of the Kono, Ouchi, and Mori clans, and Michiyasu worked hard to restore his master, the Kono clan, and his son Michifusa changed his surname from Murakami to Kurushima. In 1581 (Tensho 9), Michifusa joined Hashiba Hideyoshi (Toyotomi Hideyoshi), and later played an active role in Hideyoshi's conquest of Shikoku, becoming a daimyo with a stipend of 14,000 koku. His son Yasuchika sided with the Western Army in the Battle of Sekigahara, and in 1601 (6th year of the Keicho era) he was transferred to the three counties of Kusu, Hita, and Hayami in Bungo (Oita Prefecture), and moved to Mori (present-day Kusu Town), where his son Michiharu called his name Kurushima. He inherited the Mori domain's 14,000 koku (later 1,500 koku was distributed to his family) and became a viscount in the Meiji era.
