The permissible amount of pollutants emitted from businesses such as factories and automobiles. Standard values are set by the Air Pollution Control Act and the Water Pollution Control Act. The Air Pollution Control Act sets standards for dust, soot, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, etc., while the Water Pollution Control Act sets standards for cadmium, lead, mercury, cyanide, etc. Prefectural governors are given the authority to set additional standards that can set stricter standards depending on local conditions, as well as additional standards that add regulated items.
