A city in central Osaka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889. It faces Osaka Bay and borders Osaka City to the south. During the Muromachi period, it prospered as a center of trade with Ming China, and formed an autonomous city under the leadership of wealthy merchants. It prospered through trade with the Barbarians, and developed a townspeople's culture, until it lost its urban independence during the Azuchi-Momoyama period. The city was reduced to ashes during the Summer Siege of Osaka, and its economy declined due to national isolation. However, after the Meiji period, it developed into a modern industrial city based on traditional industries such as cutlery and textiles, and became part of the Hanshin Industrial Zone, which is mainly focused on metal, machinery, textile, and food industries. Furthermore, with the development of the coastal industrial zone centered on Sakai Port, steel mills and petrochemical complexes also moved in. Senboku New Town was developed in the hills in the southeast, strengthening its character as a commuter town for Osaka City. There are many imperial tombs and ancient burial mounds, including the tomb of Emperor Nintoku. The city is served by the Osaka Loop Line, Hanwa Line, Nankai Electric Railway's Main Line, Koya Line, Hankai Electric Tramway, Semboku Rapid Railway, and Osaka Municipal Subway Midosuji Line. In February 2005, Minamikawachi District's Mihara Town was incorporated. In April 2006, it became a city designated by government ordinance. It has seven wards: Sakai Ward, Naka Ward, Higashi Ward, Nishi Ward, Minami Ward, Kita Ward, and Mihara Ward. It has an area of 149.82 km2 and a population of 841,966 (2010). → Related topics Izumi Province | Thread Cargo Ship | Meeting Group | Osaka Prefecture | Osaka City | Soken Nikki | Takeuchi Kaido | Tsu | Hamadera | Hiranogo Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
