[raw]? [Died] c. 1010 B.C. Son of Kish, a wealthy farmer of the tribe of Benjamin, a small tribe in Israel. First king of Israel (reigned c. 1020-10 B.C.). The elders of Israel, who were suffering from persecution by the Philistines, strongly demanded that they appoint a king, so the prophet Samuel, in accordance with the word of the Lord, anointed the tall and handsome young man Saul as king (1 Samuel 10:1). Saul became king and conquered the Ammonites and Amalekites, but he continued to struggle against the Philistines, and eventually disobeyed God's word and fell out of accord with Samuel. He also became jealous of his subordinate general David, who had become beloved by the people after many military feats against the Philistines, and saw him with the Lord. He tried to kill David, but failed. He was defeated in battle by the Philistines and committed suicide in Mount Gilboa (1 Samuel 10:31).
