Berkshire Bread Act

…The Berkshire Bread Act was a system of wage subsidies for the poor that was decided at the Pelican House in Speenhamland, Berkshire, England in 1795. It is also known as the Berkshire Bread Act. This system was a representative wage subsidy system, and by the enactment of the law the following year in 1796, it was adopted not only in Berkshire but also throughout the country, mainly in the southern rural areas, and was expected to show a new direction in poor relief.
