The upper eyelid is raised by the levator palpebrae superioris, which is the muscle that raises the eyelid.

When the eye muscles become paralyzed, the eyes cannot move together or converge smoothly, resulting in diplopia, or the appearance of two objects in the same place. Ophthalmoplegia can be congenital or acquired, but in the case of congenital ophthalmoplegia, it is rare to notice the diplopia. Usually, it is only noticed when ophthalmoplegia occurs later in life in an eye that was previously normal.
