Hypnotic drug
Also known as a sleeping pill or hypnotic. A general term for drugs that suppress the functions of the central nervous system to induce a state of sleep. Classified by the site of action, 1. Those that paralyze the cerebral cortex and induce brain sleep (cortical hypnotics). Bromvalerylurea, etc. 2. Those that act on the brain stem, sedating the autonomic nervous center to induce body sleep and gradually transition to brain sleep (brain stem hypnotics). These include barbiturates such as amobarbital and phenobarbital. Depending on the characteristics of their action, they are classified as fast-acting or long-acting, and depending on the convenience of use, they are also classified as sleeping pills, hypnotics, and deep sleepers. Many of them have addictive side effects, and chronic poisoning can cause symptoms such as general fatigue and hallucinations.

眠り薬,睡眠薬とも。中枢神経系の機能を抑制して睡眠状態を誘発する薬物の総称。作用部位により分類すると,1.大脳皮質を麻痺(まひ)して脳睡眠を誘発するもの(皮質性催眠剤)。ブロムワレリル尿素など。2.脳幹に作用し自律神経中枢を鎮静して体睡眠を起こし漸次脳睡眠に移行するもの(脳幹性催眠剤)。アモバルビタール,フェノバルビタールなどのバルビツール酸類がある。作用の特徴により速効型,持続型に,使用上の便宜から就眠剤,睡眠剤,熟眠剤にも分類される。副作用としては習慣性のあるものが多く,慢性中毒では全身倦怠(けんたい),幻覚などの症状がある。
