…A tall palm tree native to the warm regions of Japan, reaching a height of 20 m (illustration). The petiole reaches 2 m in length, with two rows of inverted thorns at the bottom. The leaves are reniform, fan-shaped, palmately lobed or deeply lobed, about 1 m in diameter, with elongated lobes 1.8 to 2 m wide, with elongated, pointed tips and two deeply lobed drupes. In spring, panicles about 1 m long appear from the leaf axils, bearing numerous small yellow-green flowers. The fruit is a drupe, elliptical or obovate, about 1.5 cm long, ripens to a celadon color, and contains one seed. …
