A port city on the west coast of the southwestern peninsula of Sulawesi (Celebes), Indonesia. Population 1,092,000 (1996). The meaning of the name is "cape covered with bromeliads." Formerly known as Makassar. Facing the Makassar Strait, it is the island's largest port city, political, economic and cultural center, and the capital of South Sulawesi Province. The surrounding area is low and humid, with many open rice fields. It is the center of the Makassar people's settlement, and commerce flourished as a relay point to the Maluku region, a spice producing region in the east since ancient times. Spices were transported by the Bugis people, a seafaring people who also live in southwest Sulawesi. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
