Japanese: ウジュン･パンダン（英語表記）Ujung Pandang

A port city on the west coast of the southwestern peninsula of Sulawesi (Celebes), Indonesia. Population 1,092,000 (1996). The meaning of the name is "cape covered with bromeliads." Formerly known as Makassar. Facing the Makassar Strait, it is the island's largest port city, political, economic and cultural center, and the capital of South Sulawesi Province. The surrounding area is low and humid, with many open rice fields. It is the center of the Makassar people's settlement, and commerce flourished as a relay point to the Maluku region, a spice producing region in the east since ancient times. Spices were transported by the Bugis people, a seafaring people who also live in southwest Sulawesi.

インドネシア，スラウェシ(セレベス)島西南半島西岸にある港市。人口109万2000(1996)。地名の意味は〈アナナスの茂る岬〉。旧名マカッサルMakassar。マカッサル海峡に臨み，同島最大の港市で，政治･経済･文化の中心でもあり，南スラウェシ州の州都。周辺は低平で湿潤，水田がよく開け，マカッサル族居住地の中心で，古来東部の香料産地モルッカ地方への中継基地として商業が栄えた。香料は同じくスラウェシ南西部に住む航海民族ブギス族によって運ばれていた。
