Japanese: 天草[町] - あまくさ

An old town in the western part of Amakusa Shimoshima, Amakusa County, Kumamoto Prefecture. Most of the area is mountainous, with cliffs along the coast and little arable land. Takahama, the central settlement, is a major producer of Amakusa pottery stone, the raw material for ceramics, which is exported to Nagoya, Kyoto and other cities. The coastline is part of Unzen-Amakusa National Park and is home to Oe, a hidden Christian town, and Shimoda, a hot spring town. In March 2006, it merged with Hondo City, Ushibuka City, and the towns of Ariake, Goshoura, Kuratake, Sumimoto, Shinwa, Itsuwa and Kawaura in Amakusa County to become a city. 85.46 ^km2 . 4,726 people (2003).

熊本県天草郡，天草下島西部の旧町。大部分山地で，海岸は断崖が続き，耕地は少ない。中心集落の高浜は陶磁器原料の天草陶石の大産地で，名古屋，京都などに移出している。海岸線は雲仙天草国立公園に属し，隠れキリシタンの地大江，温泉の下田がある。2006年３月，本渡市，牛深市，天草郡有明町，御所浦町，倉岳町，栖本町，新和町，五和町，河浦町と合併し市制，天草市となる。85.46km²。4726人（2003）。
